Everyone is asking how far apart the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max really are — whether the bigger screen is worth it, how many extra hours the battery lasts, whether the Max keeps a camera to itself, how much heavier it feels, and whether the extra money buys stronger on-device AI. Below we split that into display, battery, cameras, weight, four-region prices, and AI. Figures are from Apple’s spec sheets after the 9 September 2026 event. They rewrite our earlier planning prices and are no longer a pre-event forecast band.
Read it this way: both Pro phones share the same chip, the same variable-aperture main camera, and the same starting storage. What changes is size, endurance, weight, and one list-price step. The usual misread — “the Max must have a unique periscope or a stronger NPU” — is already crossed out on the spec page.
Split “how different” into six questions
If keynote night only leaves you with “the Max is bigger,” the cart will not match in the morning. Keep six ledgers.
| Lens | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max | How to read the gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display | 6.3-inch, 2622 × 1206 | 6.9-inch, 2868 × 1320 | Both 120 Hz, ~3000 nits peak; the gap is area, not refresh |
| Battery (official video) | up to 36 hours | up to 45 hours | +9 hours; regulatory capacity about 4288 mAh vs 5567 mAh |
| Cameras | 48MP variable-aperture main + 48MP ultra-wide + 48MP tele | the same stack | |
| Weight / size | 211 g, 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm | 249 g, 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm | +38 g, +13.4 mm tall, +6.1 mm wide |
| Starting price | US $1,199 before tax; mainland China ¥9,999 | US $1,299 before tax; mainland China ¥10,999 | a fixed extra step of $100 / ¥1,000 |
| AI / chip | A20 Pro (2 nm), 32-core Neural Engine | the same die | same peak; long sessions differ in heat and watt-hours |
Both launch on iOS 27. Pre-orders open 12 September (8:00 p.m. in Beijing / Hong Kong); first sales are 18 September. Calendar: fall event timeline. The yellow flag in our pre-event checklist — “is variable aperture on both?” — can be crossed off.
A 90-second rule of thumb
- Ask whether your hand can wrap 6.9 inches before you ask for nine extra video hours.
- Do not use cameras or the chip as the upsell — both rows are identical.
- Price the 256GB starting tier first, then open the pre-order page for 512GB / 1TB / 2TB.
Display: 0.6 inches more glass, not more hertz
Both are Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion 1–120 Hz, Always-On, Ceramic Shield 2, and a peak around 3000 nits. Pixel density sits near 458 ppi on both, so holding the Max closer does not make it “sharper.”
| Item | 18 Pro | 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Diagonal | 6.3-inch | 6.9-inch |
| Resolution | 2622 × 1206 | 2868 × 1320 |
| Refresh | 120 Hz | 120 Hz |
| Peak brightness | ~3000 nits | ~3000 nits |
| Cutout | Dynamic Island + Face ID | same |
The 6.9-inch panel earns its keep in split view, 4K timelines, and reading a deck before you airplay it. The 6.3-inch panel earns it in one-handed replies, jeans pockets, and long handheld shooting.
Developers: regress Dynamic Island APIs and window-style layouts on two logical widths. Do not treat the newest flagship as the only device. On the spec page, Cmd + F for 6.3 / 6.9 is faster than the keynote montage.
Battery: nine official hours, about 30% more cell
Apple’s video-playback claim is 36 hours on Pro and 45 hours on Pro Max. Regulatory filings put the cells near 4288 mAh vs 5567 mAh (about +30%). Charging is the same: wired to 50% in about 15 minutes, MagSafe / Qi2 up to about 25 W.
Easy to miss: 36 / 45 hours are the eSIM-only SKUs. The US and Japan drop the physical tray and give that volume back to the cell. Hong Kong and mainland China still ship a nano-SIM, so local endurance must come from the local spec sheet — do not paste the US poster hours into a shopping note.
Pre-order battery check (ignore the poster)
[ ] Video hours: 36 vs 45 (eSIM-only wording)
[ ] Local page: separate dual-SIM / nano-SIM endurance?
[ ] Wired 50% still listed as 15 minutes?
[ ] Vapor chamber / sustained performance listed as Max-only? Usually not
The vapor chamber and C2 modem are this year’s shared hardware, not a Max add-on. For short-video days, 36 hours already clears most people. The Max’s nine hours are for people who travel without a pack, shoot ProRes in daylight, and still want a local model at night.
- Wait for the first review discharge curves?
- Yes — especially high brightness + 5G + a local model at once. Official hours are video playback, not “eight hours of Apple Intelligence dictation.”
- How large is the eSIM vs nano-SIM gap?
- Hong Kong coverage put the eSIM-only bonus around two extra video hours. Check CN / HK tech specs; do not treat the US 45-hour line as a promise.
Cameras: variable aperture on both, not a Max exclusive
This was the easiest pre-event error. A few leaks said “variable aperture is Pro Max only.” The spec page now locks it:
- Main: 48MP, physical variable aperture (both)
- Ultra-wide / tele: 48MP each, optical tele to 8×
- Front: 18MP
- Video: up to 4K 120 fps Dolby Vision; same ProRes offload rules
- Camera Control and Action button: both
Shallow, mid, and document-deep depth of field can be chosen in glass for the first time, not only in Portrait. Light-gathering uses the same iris. The Max does not get a second piece of glass.
The jump from about 12MP to 18MP on the front camera is a small generational bump. Do not bundle it with variable aperture as a “Pro-only selfie.” Both are 18MP.
In use, the Max’s stable extras are a larger viewfinder, a steadier hold, and enough watt-hours to keep ProRes rolling another hour. The lens list itself has no second column.
Weight: 38 grams and 6 millimeters decide before benchmarks
| Item | 18 Pro | 18 Pro Max | Delta |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | 211 g | 249 g | +38 g |
| H × W × D | 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm | 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm | +13.4 mm tall, +6.1 mm wide |
| Thickness | 8.75 mm | 8.75 mm | the same |
| Frame | aluminum + Ceramic Shield back | same | titanium does not return |
Thirty-eight grams sounds small until you shoot one-handed for 20 minutes or drop the phone in a jacket pocket. 78 mm wide is already a two-hand device for many Asian hand sizes. Thickness matches, so “the Max feels clumsy” is area, not a thicker slab.
Colors match: black, silver, glacier, burgundy. Silver is gone can be deleted from the pre-event rumor file.
Price: one extra step in the US, China, Hong Kong, and Japan
Before the event we wrote the US 18 Pro 256GB as a $1,249–$1,299 planning band. The list price landed on the conservative step: $1,199, only $100 above the 17 Pro. The Max moves in lockstep to $1,299.
| Region | 18 Pro 256GB | 18 Pro Max 256GB | Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $1,199 (ex-tax) | $1,299 (ex-tax) | California / New York often add 8%–10% at checkout |
| Mainland China | ¥9,999 | ¥10,999 | tax-in; one thousand-yuan step above the 17 Pro’s ¥8,999 |
| Hong Kong | HK$10,499 | HK$11,499 | no sales tax |
| Japan | ¥219,800 | ¥239,800 | 10% consumption tax in; tourists may reclaim it |
Mainland China published the full storage ladder. Memory inflation shows up at 1TB / 2TB — stop extrapolating “+$2,000 yuan per step”:
| Storage | CN 18 Pro | CN 18 Pro Max | vs 256GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | ¥9,999 | ¥10,999 | starting |
| 512GB | ¥11,999 | ¥12,999 | +¥2,000 |
| 1TB | ¥15,499 | ¥16,499 | +¥5,500 |
| 2TB | ¥20,499 | ¥21,499 | +¥10,500 |
US / Hong Kong / Japan 512GB–2TB prices belong on the pre-order page — Newsroom only locked the starting SKUs. Both phones start at 256GB and, for the first time, go to 2TB.
After conversion, the gap is still “one step,” not “another country”
At roughly 7.2 CNY, 7.8 HKD, and 160 JPY per dollar (order of magnitude, not a live quote): the US ex-tax sticker looks lowest, Hong Kong next, Japan tax-in still often under mainland China. Where you buy still turns on warranty, SIM tray, and Apple Account region — not the $100 between Pro and Max. The four-region method is in the earlier price piece; this article only adds the Max step and the published CN ladder.
Phones bought in mainland China with a mainland Apple Account can still miss full Apple Intelligence. If you are paying for on-device models, check the account region before you argue about $100.
AI: same peak, different heat and watt-hours
Both use TSMC 2 nm A20 Pro: 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, dual 16-core Neural Engines (32 cores total), hardware ray tracing, C2 modem, N1 wireless. Apple still does not print RAM; the supply-chain consensus remains a 12GB class for on-device voice personalization and higher-accuracy dictation — a different feature gate from the 8GB iPhone 17.
So “how much faster is the AI” is not a TOPS poster:
| You will feel | Why | You will not feel |
|---|---|---|
| Longer local-model decode | more watt-hours and thermal mass on Max | a different A20 Pro peak |
| Daytime shoot, nighttime offline summary | the capacity behind the 45-hour video line | a secret “Max NPU” |
| Long 4K outdoors in heat | vapor chamber + larger shell | a different Foundation Models list |
Why on-device NPU and cloud inference get mashed together: Apple AI chips, local vs cloud. How Siri sits on a Gemini base: why Siri uses Google Gemini.
Developers: two physical phones, not Max-only
Keep iPhone 17 (8GB) + 18 Pro (12GB class) for App Intents and Foundation Models. Use the Max to pressure “does sustained inference heat-throttle,” not as the only qualifying device. A stronger phone NPU still needs a Mac for Xcode, device debug, and CI. In launch week, the machine that dies is usually the build box, not the shopping cart. If you need a node that is not also your day, see Mac cloud plans.
Who should buy the Pro, who should pay for Max
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One hand, pocket, one charge a day | 18 Pro | chip and cameras already top out; you save 38 g and $100 |
| Travel without a pack; shoot by day, summarize locally at night | 18 Pro Max | almost all of the extra money is battery and glass |
| Budget stuck on “just over 10k yuan” | 18 Pro 256GB (¥9,999) | Max 256GB is already ¥10,999 |
| Phone as a 4K / ProRes scratch disk | pick 512GB or 1TB first, then the body | the 1TB step is steeper this year |
| First-year foldable | that is iPhone Duo (~$1,999, October), not Max | do not mash it into the slab price table |
| iOS / CI developer | pick the phone as above; do not bind the build Mac to launch day | a dedicated Mac node runs Xcode without the queue |
Treat the standard iPhone 18 as a spring 2027 story. There is no cheap new iPhone this fall to use as a third column.
FAQ
Do the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max use the same chip?
Yes. Both are 2 nm A20 Pro with a 32-core Neural Engine. AI differences come from battery, thermals, and screen area — not a second SoC.Is variable aperture Pro Max only?
No. Pre-event leaks said so; the spec page gives both 48MP mains a physical variable aperture. Cameras are not a reason to pay the Max premium this year. What do they cost in the US and mainland China?
256GB: US $1,199 / $1,299 before tax; mainland China ¥9,999 / ¥10,999 tax-in. Hong Kong HK$10,499 / HK$11,499; Japan ¥219,800 / ¥239,800 tax-in. China published 512GB and up; other regions belong on the pre-order page.Are the extra 38 grams and 9 hours worth $100?
One-handed days and a night charge: Pro. You shoot until empty or edit / split-view on 6.9 inches: Max. Leave peak camera and AI scores out of that $100.When can I pre-order and when does it ship?
Pre-orders 12 September (20:00 Beijing time); sales 18 September. The US, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Japan are usually the same wave. Purchase limits are often two Pro and two Pro Max per customer — check the local store.ZavCloud Developer Infrastructure
