How do you buy iPhone Duo on the October 16 pre-order?Price, config, Apple Trade In, and installment cost

Three ledgers for an iPhone Duo pre-order: sticker price, trade-in credit, and the monthly installment

The pre-order screen puts the sticker, the old-phone credit, and the monthly payment in one view. Those three amounts rarely land the same way. Below, the clocks and storefronts come first. Storage prices in four markets, what this foldable actually includes, Apple Trade In, and the installment plans stay in separate sections.

Figures were checked on 15 October 2026 against the iPhone Duo product page and the U.S., mainland China, Hong Kong, and Japan stores, plus MacRumors’ 28 September pre-order note. Trade-in examples come from Tom’s Guide’s read of the Apple Store quotes then on screen. Tax, stock, and promotions follow checkout. For the shape next to a slab Pro, start with the five-phone comparison. The three ways an old phone turns into money are in the 18 Pro trade-in piece; do not copy those dollar amounts onto Duo.

One pre-order moment, four clocks

The storefronts do not open four times. 5:00 a.m. Pacific on 16 October is 8:00 p.m. in Beijing and Hong Kong, and 9:00 p.m. in Japan. Availability is listed as 23 October. MacRumors also lists a first wave of more than 70 countries and regions, and a second wave of 28 more on 30 October.

Market Pre-order opens Available Where the page says to buy
United States 16 October, 5:00 a.m. PT 23 October apple.com, carriers, Apple Store; a Specialist session can be booked
Mainland China 16 October, 8:00 p.m. 23 October, after the model is approved apple.com.cn
Hong Kong 16 October, 8:00 p.m. 23 October apple.com/hk
Japan 16 October, 9:00 p.m. 23 October apple.com/jp; the configuration can be saved before checkout opens

The U.S. shop told people to come back on 12 October and prepare the order. Checkout itself starts on the 16th. Mainland China’s line that the model ships after approval is separate from the clock: a listed hour does not mean every capacity can be ordered that minute.

Mainland China 256GB, RMB

U.S. ACMI and mainland China term

Four capacities, four stickers

There are two colors, Star White and Night Sky, and color does not change the price. Capacity does. On the U.S. shop, “Connect on your own later” prices line up directly with 256GB and 512GB. The 1TB and 2TB labels did not repeat in the captured text. The last two U.S. rows follow MacRumors’ 28 September map and match the $2,599 and $3,199 prices that do appear.

Storage United States Mainland China Hong Kong Japan
256GB $1,999 RMB 15,999 HK$17,499 ¥364,800
512GB $2,199 RMB 17,999 HK$19,299 ¥399,800
1TB $2,599 RMB 21,499 HK$22,799 ¥469,800
2TB $3,199 RMB 26,499 HK$27,999 ¥574,800

An exchange rate does not rank these four prices

The mainland China store says the price includes VAT. U.S. stickers usually still need sales tax. Hong Kong and Japan do not share one tax treatment. Compare tax and whether a carrier is attached before comparing currencies.

The same U.S. shop lists iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199. Duo 256GB is $800 more. That gap is not a second A20 Pro. The product page puts the same chip in both flagships. The extra money is the foldable display and the iOS built around it. Slab Pro versus Pro Max is in the 18 Pro / Pro Max comparison. Pre-event planning prices remain in the older four-market price note and should not be mixed into the table above.

A storage footnote is easy to skip: a standard system install uses about 12GB to 24GB, including iOS 27. A 256GB phone does not leave 256GB for photos.

The price buys a foldable display, not a second Pro camera

Apple calls Duo the first foldable iPhone. Open, the inner display is 7.6 inches, 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. Closed, the outer display is 5.4 inches, with more than 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. The aspect ratio matches across both, peak brightness is 3,000 nits, and ProMotion goes to 120Hz. The inner display has a nano-texture finish, and the under-display FaceTime camera stays hidden until it is needed.

Next to 18 Pro, these are the lines that should stay separate:

  • Same chip, different camera. Duo is a 48MP Dual Fusion system: main plus ultra wide, up to 2x optical-quality zoom, at 0.5x, 1x, and 2x. There is no telephoto and no variable-aperture main camera. The front camera is a 12MP Center Stage, plus an under-display FaceTime camera at 1080p.
  • Touch ID in the side button, not Face ID. Closed and open use the same unlock. There is no Action button. There is a Camera Control.
  • eSIM only, worldwide. Mainland China activates model A3721 only. China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom can support it, usually after an in-store ID check. A U.S. unit also has no SIM tray.
  • Battery life is quoted per display. Up to 31 hours of video on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. Wired charging reaches about 50 percent in around 20 minutes. MagSafe and Qi2 25W are supported.
  • The durability claim is in the materials. Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, Ceramic Shield on the back, a scratch-resistant coating on the inner display, and IP68. Apple Pencil (USB-C) support comes later this year.
  • Siri AI rolls out in English first. A20 Pro has a dual 16-core Neural Engine and a vapor chamber. The CPU is up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, with up to 50 percent more memory bandwidth. Phones bought in mainland China cannot use Apple Intelligence for now. The page says supported phones can turn it on when the feature launches there.

If the purchase is a pocket split-screen, the inner display is the work surface. If the purchase is a telephoto and a variable aperture, 18 Pro’s camera system is the more complete one. On the development side, the outer and inner displays are two layouts. Do not fold that work into a slab-phone estimate. The method is in new-display development and test cost.

Apple Trade In credit and a carrier bill credit are not the same payment

The product page splits “up to $1,200” and Apple Trade In into two cards. The $1,200 footnote says the figure includes carrier credits: up to $1,200 at AT&T and up to $1,000 at T-Mobile. That is not the ceiling on Apple’s device value, and it should not be added to the device value a second time.

Apple Trade In works like this: add the old device at checkout. After Apple receives and checks it, the credit goes back to the original payment method. If you choose Apple Card Monthly Installments, the credit can apply at checkout. An Android phone can use the same path. Value depends on condition, year, and configuration. Not every device qualifies.

Before pre-order, Tom’s Guide put the Apple Store range at $35 to $885. Its examples: up to about $885 for iPhone 17 Pro Max, up to about $305 for iPhone 15, up to about $255 for iPhone 13 Pro, and about $35 for iPhone 8 Plus. Those are ceilings from that page. The estimate at checkout still follows the condition you enter.

Path How the money arrives Published ceiling If you stop early
Apple Trade In Returned to the payment method after inspection; applied at checkout if you use ACMI About $885 on the store range Tom’s Guide reported Settled against the device Apple actually receives
Carrier offer Some instant trade-in credit, then bill credits AT&T up to $1,200, T-Mobile up to $1,000, already inside the “up to $1,200” line Shop footnotes say remaining bill credits stop if you pay off early
Sell it yourself Cash after a sale, on your own timing No official ceiling No plan lock-in, and no automatic change to the installment

The carrier path also requires a plan. T-Mobile’s shop footnote says bill credits run over 24 or 36 months, tax is charged on the pre-credit price, and credits will not exceed the device price. Changing the plan, closing the account, or paying off early stops what is left.

Japan publishes one example that can go into a budget, not a full trade-in table. Trading in an iPhone 16 Pro (128GB) drops the Duo 256GB total from ¥364,800 to ¥264,800, a ¥100,000 difference. The actual credit still depends on condition and model.

Mainland China’s trade-in is an estimate, and the page says the final amount can be lower. iPhone Upgrade Program is a different rule for people already in it: from the third month through the end of the fifteenth month, the enrolled phone can go toward a new iPhone at no less than 50 percent of its original price. That is not a walk-in quote for any old iPhone against Duo.

24 months in the U.S. and mainland China, 36 months in Japan

The “0%” term is not the same length in each market, and dividing the sticker by the term is not the amount due.

United States: Apple Card Monthly Installments

The product page says to choose Apple Card Monthly Installments at checkout: 24 months, 0% APR, and 3% Daily Cash up front. Buying an iPhone this way requires selecting AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon postpaid at checkout. Prepaid plans are not eligible. The phone stays unlocked, so the carrier can be changed later. Tax and shipping are not on the 0% rate. They use the Apple Card variable APR. For new accounts, that range is 17.74% to 27.99% as of 1 October 2026.

The last installment absorbs rounding: it is the price minus the earlier payments. The table is sticker divided by 24, before tax and before trade-in. The monthly figure on checkout is Apple’s rounded display.

Storage U.S. sticker 24-month arithmetic Mainland China Store’s “about” monthly
256GB $1,999 $83.29 RMB 15,999 about RMB 667
512GB $2,199 $91.63 RMB 17,999 about RMB 750
1TB $2,599 $108.29 RMB 21,499 about RMB 896
2TB $3,199 $133.29 RMB 26,499 about RMB 1,105

$2,199 ÷ 24 = $91.625, shown here as $91.63. The other three U.S. rows also have a fraction of a cent, so the last month moves by a few cents. Mainland China’s “about” is the store’s own integer: 15,999 ÷ 24 = 666.625, printed as about 667. That 0% offer comes from participating banks, Huabei, or WeChat Fenfu. The card statement is the one that counts. The price includes VAT, and shipping is free.

Two other U.S. paths should not share the ACMI name. Financing through AT&T’s installment plan, T-Mobile’s equipment plan, or Verizon’s device payment program locks the phone to that carrier until it is paid off. Apple Upgrade is a lease, not a 24-month 0% loan. The lease example in the Duo shop footnote is an iPhone 18 Pro 256GB ($1,199, a typical $34.99 over 24 months or $49.99 over 12). It is not a Duo lease. Read Duo’s lease number on the checkout page.

Japan: Paidy over 36 months

Japan puts 0% on Paidy’s Apple plan, 36 months. The 0% rate is for account transfer or bank transfer, needs Paidy approval, and has a ¥3,000 minimum. Amounts under ¥1 follow the terms. With no trade-in, ¥364,800 ÷ 36 is about ¥10,133 a month for 256GB. Using the published iPhone 16 Pro 128GB example, the total becomes ¥264,800, or about ¥7,356 a month. At 36 months and no trade-in, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB are about ¥11,106, ¥13,050, and ¥15,967. A trade-in changes the balance, so the monthly payment has to be recalculated.

The Hong Kong store, on this check, listed stickers and did not print an “about per month” line the way mainland China does. A Hong Kong installment belongs to whichever bank checkout shows that day. This article does not invent one.

Mistakes that show up on pre-order day

  • Adding $885 to $1,200. The first is the Apple Trade In ceiling in the report. The second already includes carrier credits. Two ceilings are not two coupons.
  • Treating the monthly line as the price you will pay. Carrier bill credits stop if the plan changes or the phone is paid off early. The remaining principal comes back onto the bill.
  • Assuming an Apple checkout is always unlocked. ACMI stays unlocked. A carrier’s own device installment stays locked until payoff.
  • Buying a mainland China unit for U.S. Apple Intelligence. The mainland page says a Duo bought there cannot use Apple Intelligence for now.
  • Skipping eSIM and the model number. There is no physical SIM tray worldwide. Mainland China activates A3721 only, and the ID check is usually in a carrier store.
  • Reading four time zones as four launches. 5:00 a.m. PT, 8:00 p.m. in Beijing and Hong Kong, and 9:00 p.m. in Japan are one moment.
  • Copying the 18 Pro lease onto Duo. The $34.99 footnote is for the $1,199 18 Pro, not the $1,999 Duo.

Questions

When can you actually get one?

Pre-order opens at that shared moment on 16 October. The U.S., mainland China, Hong Kong, and Japan list 23 October for the first availability. Mainland China adds the approval line. MacRumors puts a second wave on 30 October. Seeing the phone in a store does not mean every capacity is in stock that day.

How far apart are the ends of the storage ladder?

In the U.S., $1,999 to $3,199, a $1,200 gap. In mainland China, RMB 15,999 to RMB 26,499. Color is free. The step-up buys storage, not another display or another chip.

What is left after trade-in?

Subtract the inspected credit from the sticker, then check whether tax is calculated before or after that credit. The U.S. carrier footnote charges tax on the pre-credit price. Japan’s published example moves 256GB from ¥364,800 to ¥264,800 only for an iPhone 16 Pro 128GB trade-in.

Is 24 months cheaper than 36?

Terms do not compare across countries. U.S. ACMI and mainland China are 24 months at 0%. Japan’s Paidy plan is 36 months at 0%. A longer term lowers the month and, with no fee, still lands near the sticker. Tax, shipping, the wireless plan, and an early payoff put the “cheaper” label back on the table.

Written on 15 October 2026. Stickers were checked on the four Apple stores, pre-order dates on the product page and MacRumors, and Trade In examples on Tom’s Guide’s summary of the store quotes then showing. U.S. and Japan monthly figures here are sticker divided by term. The last payment’s cents belong to checkout.

ZavCloud Cloud Mac

The foldable layouts still compile on a Mac

Duo’s outer and inner displays are two layouts. Xcode, the simulator, and signing do not ride along with the phone’s monthly payment. They need macOS.

A dedicated cloud Mac is rented as a machine. The two-display pass can start on pre-order day, before the foldable arrives and before another developer Mac is purchased.
